Chapter 10: Walk This Way
Growing in the different aspects of what grace means, who we are in Christ, and what we have available to us is great, but how do we effectively translate it into action? What do we do with it? How do we “walk it out”?
As Christians, we not only trust in Jesus as our Savior, but we also submit to His lordship. He is our Master, Teacher, and Leader. A disciple is someone who imitates their master in every way. We are to think as He did, believe as He did, love as He did, and act as He did. Our mission in life is to become as much like Jesus as possible; to re-present Him to the world so people may come to know Him better. His purpose and His methods must be our purpose and methods.
Jesus revealed His purpose in the following verse.
Luke 19:10 – For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.
And His methods are summarized nicely in this passage Acts 10:38 – ...God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and...he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.
Jesus was anointed with the Holy Spirit and power. This enabled Him to do good and heal those under the power of the devil. We see Him freeing people from demonic oppression, healing the sick, raising the dead back to life, feeding the hungry, offering compassion to the hurting, extending grace to the sinful, confronting the religious, and teaching about the Kingdom.
Jesus’ intimate relationship with the Father and the Holy Spirit produced a ministry of extraordinary results. Whether He did something miraculous or spoke grace-filled words, He transformed people’s lives. Just one touch or one word from Jesus was the most profound spiritual experience anyone ever had. His power and authority were awe inspiring. His grace and compassion were heart melting. His kindness and generosity were overwhelming. In short, Jesus was amazing.
How are we supposed to follow such a man? How are we to do what He did? How can we have an impact anywhere close to what Jesus had? The main purpose of receiving grace from God is to extend grace to others. Jesus gave grace to people in a lot of different ways. Most of us are comfortable extending grace in things like feeding the hungry or offering compassion to the hurting, but we have a hard time believing that we could also show grace to people by healing the sick and raising the dead. And that’s okay. If we haven’t felt the Spirit prompt us to pray for God’s supernatural power to do the miraculous, we need to follow where the Holy Spirit is leading.
However, many of us get excited in our spirits to see God do supernatural works through us. Perhaps we just need a little more faith and some practical instruction in order to take the risk. If that’s the case, seek out ministries that are “doing the stuff ” as they like to say.
